Re: a question of age
Here in the Southeast region, SERA limits the ages of juniors to 8 years
old or older. We sanction our rides through both AERC and SERA, so ride
managers in our region limit juniors to 8 years old or older and they
must wear a helmet, as well as following the AERC rules. It's a limit
that has been in place as l ong as I have been riding endurance, and my
grandchildren try to hone their riding skills to be ready by age eight.
The twins just turned 8 and are already asking when they can go. The
fact that they live in another state and only ride when they visit me
may delay their start somewhat. But it's a reasonable age to start in
this sport. They are more mentally ready for the long hours in the
saddle, and better prepared to take care of their own horses.
