Actually it's a true statement that riding on the cutoffs at Tevis is not
a great plan for insuring completion. Without allowing for extra
time for problems along the trail, which can include just negotiating
natural trail challenges (like bogs, rocks, etc) or waiting for a mule
that's decided to stall on a switchback trail, riding on the cutoffs will
mean you may have to do a lot of catchup riding. If you have enough
horse to ride faster to catch up, seems to me a person should be riding
faster anyway. Having a "slush fund" of time is just good
common sense. On any trail - and the Tevis trail in particular -
it's important to *plan* your ride, rather than allow circumstances to
dictate your ride. Lif
