Catabolic: tissues being broken down. In the athlete this can occur when the
body decides it nees more fuel or protein than is currently in the system via
the digestive tract and blood. Catabolism could be triggered when the horse
"runs out of gas" in a ride, but is urged to keep going, or it can occur at
the end of a ride during recovery if substrate (fuel) is not provided quickly.
Anabolic: Tissue building or rebuilding. The opposite of catabolic.
Cachexia: Similar to catabolic, except that this term typically describes a
chronic condition, generally associated with one disease or another.
