Re: RC: FOUNDER and ABCESSES Need Opinions..
Do they founder in the winter when the grass is not lush ? Are the horses
seriously overweight and cresty? Is PA an area with a possibly toxic level of
selenium in the soil? I heard of horses dying when the orchard next door was
sprayed - the spray drifted over into the horse pasture. How long has this
been happening? Years? What do the broodmares eat different from the
stallions besides the grass? What has happened to horses they have sold - has
the problem stopped when the horse moved? What is the footing like where they
are turned out? Are the horses close relatives that are foundering - genetic?
Did the previous owners of any of these horses have any problems? Runoff from
nearby farms poluting pasture with fertilizer/pestacides. Is there a stream
running thru the pasture...test it. Test soil in pasture. If different hay is
given to the mares than the stallions, maybe it is contaminated from where it
was grown. A neighbor had problems with his dairy cows suddenly not
producing. Turned out a nearby electrical substation was leaking current, and
the cows got shocked when they tried to drink from the water trough and when
they were hooked up to the milking machine. Sorry if disorganized and some
maybe far fetched, just thinking out loud.
