Here's something to know about IVs. Every time you puncture the jugular vein
you do damage. Not only do you damage the vessel itself, but Rantannen, et al
have shown that IVs tend to cause aggregation of blood cells. These agregates
then flow into the heart and attach themslves to the wall of the heat (and
probably to blood vessels as well, but Rantannen was just looking at the
heart). Later, they pull away, leaving a lesion behind, and then move on into
the lungs, where they plug up small capillaries--not good in a racehorse,
because these capillaries later explode and the horse bleeds from the lungs
in a race.
Others have found that venous injections cause small particles of debris
(hair, skin, maybe dirt) to flow into the lungs, where they are encapsulated
and sometimes become infected--more damage.
In racing, it is my position that, when the needle goes in, the owner/trainer
has made a big mistake.
