<< I guess I have to jump in here right now, becuase this simply is not
true. For several YEARS there have been a very detailed series of John Lyons
articles in RIDE magazine (A free California horse magazine); on starting
colts, including some very detailed info on giving to the bit and reining.
For the last year; there have been a series of articles in HORSE AND RIDER,
called Bringing up Baby, which deal with handling weanlings. >>
I don't know about "RIDE!" but rest assured that John is well paid for his
articles in HORSE AND RIDER, as well as in the vast majority of publications.
Don't get me wrong--I feel that people SHOULD be paid for offering their
expertise. But it is not accurate to portray material printed in magazines
as "free" from the author--I also do a bit of free-lance writing, and while
the pay is more dependent upon the circulation and income of the magazine
than it is upon the effort put forth in the writing, articles nonetheless are
paid for by the magazines that print them.
