To share an experience we had once:  We had a remarkable horse ... was 
consistent top ten at 50 miles, placed 4th in Tevis once and was in the top 
20 other times, did multi-days ... you name it, he did it.  He excelled at 
Ride & Tie and won a first, several 2nds and BCs. He was half Morgan, half 
Percheron, stood 16 hands and weighed about 1100-1200#.  Along about 12 years 
old he had an uncharacteristic lame spell for a short period of time.  X-rays 
and the vet diagnosed "navicular changes".  We did nothing, he came sound, 
and he finally died, completely sound,  at age 32+ .
