Hi! Ed & Wendy,  I haven't seen this trainer use the bat but I do know the 
horse would run at Mike and I think to keep him at a safe distance he used 
the bat. Mike is a gentle man and I have seen the results of horses that have 
been trained by him and they aren't cowardly scared, just well mannered and 
responsive.  I think he likes horses more than people.   Pam in Reno
