Heated Waterers

I am writing an article on heated waterers, their care, and proper installation. As I live in California, I don't have much first hand experience with this topic! 

I would appreciate any info readers/riders have. What type of heater do you use? How does it work? Have you had any problems with it? What did you learn from installing it? Also, interested to hear the pros and cons of those who have had more than one type. Thanks in advance!!!
