KAren,
This does illustrate why it can be difficult to get through to an
ultra-competitive newbie that they should take the full 6 hours when doing
their first 25, until they learn a few things. They see the 50's taking
less. Their first thought is "you're just trying to slow me down so you can
beat me, I'll show you!" I have actually heard this.
This is also the crux of the problem when trying to design limited distance
for both experienced riders & conditioned horses who want to be competitive,
and using it as a training/teaching distance for newbie's.
Fortunately, 99% seem to figure things out just fine. It's that other 1
that's causing all the hand wringing & gnashing of teeth.
