Definitely not yellow star thistle, we have that here too.  I once saw some 
in a field and started pulling it up, as it's considered a noxious weed here. 
 The more I pulled the more I saw.  I still try to pull it any time I can, 
and I have also reported it to the local Noxious Weed Control board, who will 
go out and spray it.  I think Gesa was right it may be milk thistle.
