RE: Re: Re: help needed with fly spray and halter fit
When you are boarding/caring for a large number of horses, time is a real
issue. Leading horses in and out of barns/stalls, catching a whole herd
standing at a gate, wanting to come in for dinner, really requires leading
by something on their head and a lead rope. Then there's the possibility of
a barn full of horses without halters on and a fire! I boarded at a large
farm that had the same policy for safety and time reasons. However, they
also required that you use something that was breakaway or flimsy enough to
break. A good solution for leading and preventing hair loss is a collar,
either a brood mare or cow collar, made from single thickness leather works
great. They have a ring for a lead rope and just don't seem to rub horses
necks at all. If you can't find one then simply cut the hardware off an old
halter and have someone stitch one up for you. Just be sure you make it long
enough. Long dog collars are too short except for youngsters by the way.

Why would anyone REQUIRE a halter on a horse in pasture? How dangerous.
Don't
they know any better? I just hate it when I drive along and see horses out
in
pasture with halters on. I had a neighbor lose a horse in a rain storm.
Horse
got caught on fence post by its halter and slid in the muck and strangled.
(This happened before I moved in so I never had a chance to warn the
neighbor.)
