Actually...I come close to that at times. >g< Kaboot comes into a 16x11
stall at about 10 AM this time of year. It's got a fan in one corner,
and I keep a muck bucket with a manure fork in it in the other. The barn
isn't far from the house and every time I have to go by there for any
reason I just pop in and pick the stall in to the manure bucket and toss
a little shavings on top. There's a 12' shed outside the stall door, so
it's nice and dark in there. My barn is about as devoid of flies as you
could hope for...BUT... the other day I hadn't emptied the muck bucket in
a day or so and it was about 3/4 of the way full. I noticed the top
looked very smooth, as if the manure had been broken down...I flipped the
top layer over with the fork and MAGGOTS!! GAG! In years of using this
system that's the first time I've had that happen. I took the manure out
and poured it down a bank to spread it out hoping that the exposure would
kill them. I was kind of considering putting some lime in the bucket in
the future. I don't like liming the stall since it dries their feet so
bad (horses, not maggots, they don't have any yet). Any advice on the
proper care of healthy maggots...so I can be sure and break all the
rules? One weird clue, Kaboot was on anti-biotics during this time...so
maybe these were really healthy maggots. :-P
