A (Va. Dept of Transportation) VDOT project will make changes in the safety
of a trail/road crossing.
Please pass this message on to friends in the area. Riders are going to need
to show support for a safe crossing. The addresses for showing your support
for a trail over- or underpass are listed at the end of the forwarded
message.

ALERT: PROPOSED BRIDGE REPLACEMENT ON HUNTER MILL ROAD WILL
IMPACT W&OD TRAIL CROSSING. ATTEND AND SUBMIT COMMENTS AT
JUNE 21 VDOT PUBLIC MEETING OR BY JULY 1, 2000 COMMENT DEADLINE
On Wednesday June 21, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
will hold a Location and Design Public Hearing " to review and discuss
preliminary plans for the proposed replacement of the existing bridge on
Route 674 (Hunter Mill Road) over Difficult Run in Fairfax County." By
widening and straightening Hunter Mill Rd across the W&OD Trail, this
project will make an already difficult trail crossing even more foreboding
unless VDOT's current proposal is modified to upgrade the trail crossing.
Ask VDOT to build a trail overpass or underpass of Hunter Mill Rd (while
preserving at-grade connections) as an integral part of this project.
Alternatively, the project should include a traffic signal (and possibly a
median refuge) at the W&OD Trail crossing and a roadway design that
promotes driving *under* 35 MPH.
In addition, please express support for the 10-foot paved path and 4-foot
horse trail proposed along the east side of Hunter Mill Rd and for the
paved shoulders proposed on both sides of this roadway, since vocal
opposition to these important design features seems likely.
The informal, open-house meeting will be held from 5-8 PM on June 21 at
Sunrise Valley Elementary School, 10824 Cross School Rd, Reston, just
south of the W&OD Trail/Sunrise Valley Dr junction. Arrive anytime during
those hours to review and discuss the current project plans and to submit
oral and/or written comments.
Written comments may also be submitted by July 1 to: Mr. Thomas F. Farley,
NoVA District Administrator, VDOT, 3975 Fair Ridge Dr, Fairfax VA 22033,
<farley_tf@vdot.state.va.us. Please copy Supervisor Catherine Hudgins,
Hunter Mill District, 12000 Bowman Towne Dr, Reston VA 22090,
<huntermill@fairfax.co.va.us, 703-478-0283.
Your voice is needed for a safer W&OD Trail!
