Ideally, temperary files are thrown to the hard drive when some applications
are installing or exchanging data or doing other temporary tasks--then
erased. But if you crash your computer, or reboot abnormally, of if there is
a misbehaving program--the temp files are left in the temp directory. When
this happens, some programs go in there and look around--and find
garbage--and worse, use it!
As soon as your computer starts to exhibit signs of constipation, go in there
and clean up the mess, then reboot. Solves the problem most of the time.
