Roger,
Just keep in mind a couple of things:
1. Agents that raise the pH in the gut will cause MORE production of HCL,
while temporarily relieving painful symptoms.
2. As you suggested, agents that prevent the production of HCL compromise
digestion.
3. Any sudden change in diet is likely to cause a problem, and colic is the
big one.
4. Your analysis of the causative factors is a good one--combat those over
the long term. Avoid instant solutions--for the most part, they don't exist.
5. When the horse says he's "off", always believe him. and be careful
bringing him back to full work--and full ration.
