"HANOVER, MASSACHUSETTS -- Richard F. Briggs, 81, of Hanover,
Massachusetts, proprietor of Briggs' Stable in Hanover for
almost 40 years, died Saturday at home.
A career army officer, he attended the Cavalry School at
Fort Riley in Kansas. During World War II, he served in the
3rd armored division in Italy. He was also assigned to
other posts in Germany, Vietnam, and throughout the
United States before retiring at the rank of colonel.
On returning with his family to Hanover he assumed proprietorship
of Briggs' Stable which had been established by his late
father, Stanley A. Briggs, in 1930.
Under his guidance, equine enthusiasts of all ages and abilities
learned to ride, care for horses, and enjoy a mixture of
activities from sleigh rides to mounted games to horse shows.
He was born in Hanover. He attended Hanover schools and
graduated from Wilbraham Academy and Norwich University in 1942.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine H. (Lowery) Briggs;
a son, Rovert Stanley Briggs of Hanover; two daughters,
Gail Anne Briggs of Plympton and Vicki Frost Dougherty
of Hanover; two brothers, Austin Briggs of Hanover and
Philip Briggs of Virginia; two sisters, Marjorie Stroboino
of Ohio and Priscilla Leary of Maine, five grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren."
