Hi Julia,
We got some very good advice, several years ago, from the RCMP on
hauling horses long distances. At that time they said they loaded their
horses and basically drove until they reached their destination! We
have never done that, but did take their advice to keep water and hay
(wet) available to them at all times, electrolyte them before starting
and during the trip, and stop for a rest about every 3-4 hours. If
possible, when you stop for overnight, let them eat lots of grass.
Don't feed very much grain, but what they get should be wet and in very
small amounts - maybe a handfull every time you stop. The main thing
is to keep them hydrated.
Also, if you tie, give them enough slack to get their heads down - they
breathe better and will not get as stiff.
