Acadia's Wildwood Stable Concession Will Reopen June 15th

Dear Friends: The management and staff at Wildwood want to thank the
hundreds of individuals who wrote letters expressing their strong support
for the continuation of horse and carriage related visitor services in
Acadia National Park.

Mr. Robert Stanton, the Director of the United States National Park Service
in Washington DC has reopened the Wildwood Stables concession in Acadia
National Park.

On June 7th, the National Park Service and Ed Winterberg signed an interim
contract for the operation of Wildwood Stables this season. As in previous
years the stables will open on June 15th.

Stabling reservations for the summer will be honored. In addition,
carriage rides will be offered and the two wheelchair accessible carriages
will be available. At season's end, all concession-owned temporary
structures and stabling equipment will be removed so the park service can
request bids for a long term contract.

The abrupt closing, last month, of the only horse stables in one of the
Nation's most visited national parks, ignited a fire storm of protest
letters addressed to the Director and to Members of Congress in Washington,
DC. Most vocal and outraged were citizens from 13 states with confirmed
short-term stabling reservations for their private horses this summer.
Acadia Park features a 57-mile carriage road system that was created by the
late John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The Park Service considers Acadia's carriage
roads to be the finest example of purposefully created horse roads in the
world.

The temporary solution, which reopened the stables for this
summer was proposed by Ed Winterberg, in a letter delivered to Director
Stanton in Washington, DC on May 15th. According to Winterberg; "We all
stepped back, took a deep breath, and agreed to a reasonable solution in the
national interest. We did the right thing for the park visitor and for the
future of Acadia's magnificent carriage roads."
