Kelly,
Zidan looks like a great prospect with his overall good conformation and
bright attitude. Many horses with bad conformation do surprisingly well in
distance riding with few lamenesses due to structure, but he looks fine.
You mentioned your worry about hock strength. As you progress with ground
training, just add in some cavaletti exercises. Make them fun for you both.
Also put a ground pole at the entrance to his shelter so that he must pick
up all four feet in order to go in or out.
He may have fallen in play simply because he has not had much turn-out with
buddies? My horses wipe out in play occasionally, especially when the
ground is wet, but more often when they are out of shape.
