Calcium is chemically always bonded to another anion of some sort to balance
out the electrical charges. The only way calcium exists just as "calcium"
is in solution (such as in the plasma), when it's called ionized calcium.
If you ever get a blood panel done, you'll see that calcium is measured as
ionized calcium. So calcium formate and calcium lactate are still quite
bioavailable to the horse for absorption. :-)
