Michelle,
When my horse had a supposed ear infection, I just snuck in there with some of
those facial cotton pads (dipped in warm water) while he was eating his grain.
It's not graceful by any means, but it worked and he didn't become headshy in
the process.

(I used the word 'supposed' because he was later diagnosed with photic
headshaking - which has nothing to do with ear infections)
