A picture is worth a thousand words

I am fairly new to endurance and have always been told to travel at an extended trot. Why? Tom Ivers states "a horse has a built in gearshift". Studies show that horses travel at a gait and speed to reduce energy consumption and stress on their legs. Does this mean I should let the horse pick the gait if I pick the speed we travel?
