Just to add some more fuel to this particular fire. When I learnt to ride
(some while ago now!) this was the classic way to ride a horse down-hill.
Someone, and I can't remember who, suggested to me a few years back that a
better way to go downhill in an endurance race was not to actually sit deep.
Their argument being that this actually weighed the horse's back end down
and prevented him moving freely.
When I go downhill at speed (with my eyes closed!) I don't lean forward but
I don't sit down either, I just balance in my stirrups. If I feel I need
help balancing then I use one hand to hold onto the cantle of my saddle.
It seems to work for me but perhaps its all wrong.
Heather
& DARRAR (yeah, she has to hold on to the back of the saddle when I'm going
fast otherwise she'd fall off........)
