I don't see the point of this argument. Tom, you're only interested in
the winners. Guess what, they're going to go fast UP it and DOWN it.
Heck, if you want to know what Kaboot looked like going down the mountain
at Biltmore in the mud last spring, take a good photo of a quarterhorse
doing a slide stop, then tip it forward until the ground is at the angle
you choose (you'll have to rotate the rider to sit straight up though,
and while you're at it cut off that silly hat). I believe he trotted in
the front, and hardly lifted his rear feet the whole way down just slide
city. Maybe the problem here is the term "fast" When I say fast I mean
a 10mph trot. My horse will be a little sore in the rear end after doing
this on a 100. He will not be sore in the rear end from doing it on a
50.
Melissa Crain attributed her ROC win to passing people on the downhill.
She did the same thing at the Biltmore 100 with a different horse and
took BC. She apparently trains for fast downhills. Granted, you're
risking suspensories...but it takes some risk and knowing how to manage
it to win.
