horse trailer habitat
<snip>
I hear they have bears at my next ride (6 days and counting) so, maybe,
staying by the fire will be safer than in my flimsy Wal-Mart tent that a
flying sparrow could penetrate with little difficulty.

Well, there's always the horse trailer to live in. Just sweep out the
poop, unroll your cut-to-size foam pad and sleeping bags, and voila'!...
just like home. Even the range bulls can't tear it up. We sleep in our
little old 2-H with our suitcases in the mangers and we DON'T bring food
inside (bears can open a vehicle like a tin can). We use the escape door
to go in and out of and keep two side windows cracked for ventilation,
emergency exit, and to access the door handle. I had to crawl out the
window once when I accidentally shut the window by the door too far and it
latched:) We haven't had any leaking in when it rains either, but hail
gets a bit loud. Our horse stays on an overhead picket or tied to the
trailer. He's a quiet one and not afraid of cattle or wildlife. We
blanket if the weather warrants.
I've had that harrowing experience with neighbors almost backing over my
dark green tent once too... never again. High winds will also make your
tent pop and snap and your neighbors angry when their horses get skittish
at 2am. I'd rather be on a set of wheels when caught in a lightning storm
than sitting in our cabin tent with metal poles sticking up.
