Re: RC: dishy faces
<<An article I read some time ago
stated that the Bedouins from a
certain tribe (several centuries
ago) felt that extreme dished
faces/teacup muzzles were faults and
discarded these animals from their
breeding programs. However, they
were pleased when they discovered
that these animals were highly
prized by European monarchs and that
they would pay great sums for these
"culls". The article speculated that
the reason these extreme faces on
the horses were considered "faults"
was because of the possibility of
reduced airway and teeth problems,
i.e. upper jaw.>>
This is mentioned in Asil Arabians IV - original article by W. Schraps,
(Something German), 1982. Yep, my mom bought it for me for Christmas and
I sat down and read it cover to cover (English part, anyway). It was
called a "Pike face" at one point. I guess they wouldn't like my horses
then.
W. Schraps:
"These types, with a nasal bone displaying a strong inward curvature,
were repeatedly to be found in all families of hte Arabian race. The
Bedouins tended to value these horses less, as this inward curvature of
the nasal bone was a sign of constricted nasal passages and thus impaired
efficieny." This author also slams Skowronek pretty bad.
But on a personal experience note. Don't confuse a dishy profile with a
dished (bone) face. A pronounced Mitbah can make a horse look very dishy
even if the nose bones are perfectly straight. My 13 yo mare had a
perfectly straight profile as a baby and now has one of the most extreme
heads around.
Oh, and if anyone is interested in a sort of weekly quote I could
probably manage that. Then again, a lot of you don't have Arabs, maybe
not.
