it is my understanding that all animals from any domestic species that are
not properly vaccinated(unless they are too young to receive a vaccination)
WILL be euthanized if they have been exposed to a potentially rabid animal.
and any vaccinated animal will be quarantined for six months with booster
vaccinations given. I know that this is true for both AZ and NM , and also
Vermont. I believe it to be a federal regulation, but am not totally sure.
In addition for all donkey and mule owners. The rabies vaccination label
says for horses. it does not mention other equine. In the Vermont region a
lady had one of her donkeys exposed to a rabid racoon. The racoon was found
and tested on her property near the animals pen. The state veterinarian
wanted to have her donkey euthanised based on the labeling of the vaccine
even though the donkey was vaccinated. She fought this decision and was able
to keep him quarantined for six months with no side-effects.
