  Subject: CTR: Sick pony

  Hello to all,
I am desperate for some help.  Here is my
  problem:

I have a 10 year old, Hackney pony gelding.
He has been with us two years and quite healthy except for a dermititis that
developed this winter/spring twice and required lots of creativity to
eliminate.  On March 31 I administered his annual vaccinations: Influ.,
Tetanus, E W Enceph, on one side of the neck and Rabies on the other.  No
problems.  Have been doing this for years to all my animals.
Within two days we had a myocitis in the neck -
mostly on the Rabies side.  Treated with Bute and seemed to ease within
three days.  Within 8 days of the injections we had a horse who couldn't
drop his head to eat his grain.  Appetite still good, good bowel activity
but real stiff in the neck with muscles as hard as rocks and a temp of 102.5 -
103.0.  Vet out and administered Banamine, Gentacin and a steroid IV
because he thought we had a deep neuropathy.  Continued Bute daily.
48 hours later pony is better - much better.  Whew!!  BUT three days
later we are back with similar symptoms from the point of the shoulder back to
the hocks.  Muscles rock hard - walks like a little toy soldier and
obviously in much distress.  Vet out this past Monday - gave Vit. B12,
Vit E and Selenium and drew blood.  Continued Bute daily 1 gm.  Pony
seemed better in 24 hours.  Not now though.  Blood results show low
liver values but high protein.  RBC, WBC, Leukos are all bottomed
out.  Current plan is for me to pick up more Vit B12. Vit E and Selenium
and do another injection tonight then start adding powdered E/Selenium to his
grain.  This poor guy is pretty miserable
  - I can't believe that he is willing to tolerate more of the poking and
  prodding.

Any help of any type out there???  If you
have experience with something similar OR professional expertise please
  respond!!

  Thanks so much!!
  Karen
