I have to agree with this point of view.  I also think that career mileage
has a lot to do with the quality of the horse.

For how many years?
There is a core group of exceptional horses, but for the most part, what I
have seen indicates to me that most horses last 3-5 years.

There is some human nature at work... in that to someone who comes into the
sport, anyone who has been in the sport *longer* then them seems like an
'old-timer'.  AERC Endurance has grown at a phenomenal rate in the past few
years (anyone have the numbers?) and (disclaimer: I don't know Kerry!! so
please no offense) most people think that a horse that can top ten 2-3 years
is something pretty hot. . What I have seen is that many horses can run
pretty hard for 2-3 years, and it is the exceptional horses that last on
past that.
