IMO, the point is *not* whether you can get your
horse thirsy enough (or tough enough) to drink
contaminated water........ the point is drinking
water is DRINKING water, and should not be contaminated.
And contaminated it becomes when fly spray, sweat,
and anything else that's been growing on your sponge
get into the watering trough.
Drinking water should not be contaminated in the moist East/midwest,
just as it should not be wasted in dry West.
I bet no one feeds moldy dry hay at the Vet checks....
So, why the lack of concern about water?
