Oh Pat!!! You are talking to the most directionally challenged human being
on the planet! I figure if I can find my way to camp at the end of a ride,
then anybody can <G>. The Tevis is so well marked (not to mention that
narrow trail in the dark where your horse couldn't be forced to make a wrong
turn :) that even I have managed to complete all 100 miles several times.
What you said about 100s being more like 4 25s is true. You just ride to
each vet check. If you start out thinking "Whew, 100 miles today" its a
little intimidating (exhillirating too though at 5:00 a.m.). I just start
out saying "OK 10 miles (give or take) to Squaw Valley" and go from there. I
agree with what you said about experiencing other endurance rides and getting
a handle on your horse (I know not your exact words, my interpretation here).
But don't let the fear of getting lost slow you down -- it sure hasn't held
me back <BG>
