The trainer, working with my youngster (5, coming 6 now) last year, was
riding through a wide moderately deep river, not too swift, and she dipped
her sponge into the water. It floated down the current on the colt's left
side and I'm sure he thought it was out to get him. I turned around in time
to see him leap skyward, kick at the sponge, and deposit the trainer neatly
into the river. Fortunately she was unhurt and it was a reasonably warm day.
But all these stories serve to warn me not to try that trick without
practicing at home (sponge dipping, that is).
