I bought a "rescue" arab mare from a California feedlot, 8 years old and had
never been halter-broke.  My trainer, who uses natural horsemanship
techniques, had that little lady stepping into the trailer on her own and
standing quietly in less than an hour.  Several repeat lessons should be
used to reinforce the training, and you should NEVER wait until you actually
need to trailer the horse to start the process.

My horses all hop up without a moment's hesitation and stand to be tied.  I
do think they would tell me to "get real" if I ask for the genuflect, but I
am endlessly amazed when I go somewhere and see people have difficulties
loading their horses.  It's COMMON to see people literally get behind the
horse and SHOVE them into the trailer.  What a dangerous act, and if they
lack the basic discipline of "leading", who is boss on the trail?

Has anyone had to have a trainer come and teach their horse to
load?  I do not have a trailer to work with and my mare and I
have already had a couple of bad experiences.  I was going to
hire a trainer to bring his trailer and teach my horse(and me)
how to load.  I'm a bit nervous since most of the trainers that
do this are QH men and may not care about the more sensitive
natures of the Arabs.  I don't want him to force her(no whipping)
so I want to have the session here with me present.

What do you think?

Okay, sounds like a great idea, at least the genuflecting on request.  Mare
is New Age when she's not a Methodist, so we'll use incense and skip the
holy water to which I'm allergic anyway.  Currently able to ride up the
front steps onto the porch which we will use for an altar.

For those folks who educate their equines in useful behaviors aside from
carrying riders, what are your favorite maneuvers?  Any good books/videos
you like?  I'd prefer to avoid using food rewards, but would like to hear
what you do and how even using treats.
