quartercrack question on mules

I have a farrier-directed question, for y'all.  I went
on a neighborhood ride last weekend and one of the
riders has a molly mule coming four this year.  She is
about 16-3 hands and has 00 feet.  I noticed quarter
cracks all the way around.  What would cause them?  Is
she just too big for her hooves, or would improper
shoeing do this?

Any insight would be appreciated.
