Hi All -
When I l ived in Oklahoma, a friend of ours who was on the faculty of Okla.
State Vet School, strongly urged all horse owners to vaccinate their horses for
rabies. Rabies was endemic in the skunk population and also not uncommon among
other animals with which horses could come in contact, especially out in
pasture. And he said the most common way rabies got transmitted from horses to
humans was when the human tried to help the "choking" horse. Foals often were
the victims and, of course, lots of people would rush to help the poor baby and
fall victim themselves.
