Slide-in Camper vs. Gooseneck

<are you all lusting after goosenecks? Anyone using a pop-up, slide-in
camper?

I confess that I have lusted in my heart for a GN . . . and here's why.
Since 1990 I have been using a Dodge diesel with a 10 foot Lance camper to
pull a 2 horse slant load BP trailer with walk-in tack room. For years
before I got the camper I slept in the front seat of my truck the night
before doing endurance rides, and I have found the camper exquisitely
comfortable by comparison. A friend uses a pop-up camper on her rig to
reduce weight and wind resistance, but even with a big, bulky camper like
mine you can get twice the gas mileage with a diesel (plus all the creature
comforts a bigger camper offers).
But one of the downsides of the camper has been scary experiences when
driving in high winds, which are not infrequent in Northern California.
Last year I had a terrifying trip in the Carquinez Straits area while
returing home after the Wine Country Ride.
Another drawback is the difficulty of backing and maneuvering this kind of
rig in tight spaces, even with huge side mirrors, but maybe I'm just
"backing
impaired."
If you decide to go ahead with a BP trailer, I suggest you have stabilizer
bars installed to prevent trailer sway; they make for a safer, more
comfortable ride for your horses.
Happy hunting,
Karen Schwartz
