I've also found that if bikers aren't already horse-wise, they are far more 
apt to talk if I just strike up a conversation (Hi, nice day, isn't it?) 
rather than "asking" them to talk.  Some of them get pretty tongue-tied if 
you act worried and just start asking them to "say something."  Horse gets 
less upset if you talk to the bikers in a normal conversational tone, too.

BTW--the BEST way to earn praise from mountain bikers is to be running a 
chainsaw and clearing trail--they practically want to hug your horse and kiss 
your feet!
