I mix it ahead of time in a blender at home. Don't even try mixing it at
the ride - what a mess that is!!!
I make sure it's nice and smooth and put it in a tupperware. Then it goes
into the ice chest. When I get to the ride I take it out and stir it. If
it's too thick, I'll add a little more water. Then I fill up my
syringes. If it's a one day ride I won't put it in the ice chest, but if
we're going for an entire week then I do because I'm afraid of it spoiling
(will it, does anybody know?).
Once the ride starts I give a dose every 2 hours. I can get about 2 oz.
into one syringe. If it's also time to dose electrolytes what I do is give
the CC first, let him drink then give the e-lytes.
If he eats his cob/bran mash and Complete Advantage well at the vet check,
I won't give a dose of the CC then. It works well with this horse anyway,
he seems to stay steady and constant. Instead of dosing in a syringe, I
can mix the powder into his feed and he *loves* it that way. Just isn't
practical on a multiday though when we only have one vet check sometimes at
35 miles. I can only imagine the mess I'd have if I tried using a squirt
bottle!
I can't wait to get the results back from the bloodwork testing we had done
at Death Valley. I had Rocky tested on day 2 and day 4 of the ride. We'll
see how it compares to Silver State, when he was tested on day 1 and day 3
and I didn't use the CC. I also gave him considerably more electrolytes at
DVE, but then he was working harder and it was a longer ride. (he got more
e-lytes than CC)
