Michelle-
Yes, I agree the Jack Meagher book is a great one! I got my first copy
about ten years ago, and brought my endurance horse at the time to one of
his two-day clinics at a local university shortly thereafter. It was
wonderfully enlightening to hear his lecture, and I sure felt blessed to
have the opportunity to have him evaluate my horse and see the obvious
beneficial results of his massage - that was my introduction to the amateur
equine massage I've done on my own horses and (those I've crewed for) since
then. I remember him telling the crowd how with humans he'd massaged, the
most stoic were the marathon runners and those with the lowest pain
threshold were the football players! (I don't know if this was true, but
makes a funny story.)
And yes, those are important points to consider about the different sorts of
education and different difficulties between human and equine massage. I do
have years of experience with horses, riders (taught riding over 20 years,
whatever I've learned from endurance riding, etc., but certainly not
everyone who approaches human massage schools for advice on a career in
equine massage has a similar background, and I see your point that a school
specifically for equine massage is probably the most appropriate choice.
Unfortunately for me, I am dependant on attending a school in this state in
order to have the funding to go.
Thank you very much for the information and encouragement though. Who
knows, maybe my circumstances will change and I'll be able to pursue equine
massage at another time.
