A Friday slide presentation by Jeff Pauley touched the basics of shoeing principles - conformation and foot balance - from the ideal to the problematic. Stresses of distance riding on the foot and bony column. Hoof growth as an indication of pathology or shoeing problems - steep walls, flares, rings, hairline irregularities - how to read the entire picture. Friday morning and afternoon Jeff held individual sessions with each rider, examining the horse's hooves and movement. Discussions regarding previous or current issues, progress and maintenance of hoof balance and health, alternative shoeing programs. Question and answer session, shoeing sessions if requested. Saturday afternoon the WEC staff - Chef Tom Johnson, Head vet Anne Stuart DVM and farrier Jeff Pauley, met together with each individual for further discussion and consultation. Horses were trotted in hand on the pavement, questions asked and answered, discussion of the short term programs and shoeing needs of the horses - some were in R&R, some preparing for competitions, some focusing on foot improvement and therapy prior to resuming training and competition.
