The 2003 PAC is located in Trout Lake, Washington, an hour and a half northeast of Portland, Oregon, and a half-hour north of Hood River, Oregon. The small farming and logging community of Trout Lake is made up of a gas station, a general store, and a home-style restaurant. Ride camp is located five paved miles north of Trout Lake in the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest at the Mt. Adams Horse Camp. Camp is in a grassy 80-acre field, with a mountain view from the south end, surrounded by Douglas fir forest.
Prepare to be self-sufficient. You're in the middle of the woods. There will be drinking water, horse water, and some food vendors on site. We'll update you as we know more about what and when.
Horse Stabling:
Horses must be kept under control at all times, and by Monday, September 8th
at the latest they must be contained within solid portable corrals (or tied
securely to the trailer) while in
the stable area.
Horses must be kept under control at all times, and by Monday, September 8th
at the latest they must be contained within solid portable corrals while in
the stable area. The OC highly recommends solid corrals prior to September
8th; however, the OC acknowledges you may opt to corral your horses
differently prior to September 8th. Horses must remain within their
individual stable enclosures between the hours of 11pm to 5am with the
exception of race day. In view of the relaxed stable security requirements,
each country/zone will therefore be accountable for the safety and security
of the horses under their care. Stewards shall undertake periodic patrols
throughout the day and night to assist and enhance stable security.
Only definite entries or officially nominated alternate horses will be
allowed in the ride camp (with the exception of the raffle horse which will
comply with all FEI veterinary requirements). All additional horses must be
camped in the non-FEI area (where first-come, first-serve space is very
limited and is open to the general public) or stabled elsewhere in Trout
Lake If you would like to bring a companion horse with you in your travels,
please contact the organizing for a list of places in Trout Lake to house
your companion horse during the week prior to the ride.

The small town of Trout Lake, Washington is just five miles south of ridecamp; however, there you'll only find a small general store (Trout Lake Grocery), a Chevron station (yes, they have diesel), and a few diner-style restaurants.
Plan on stocking up on most supplies before you arrive. Hood River is your best option with a few large grocery stores (Safeway or Rosauers, which has a large organic section), two small feed shops (Little Bit or Cenex), outdoor supplies and clothing, and just about anything else you might find you need. There's also a Thriftway in White Salmon, Washington (just on the other side of the river and two miles up the hill).
There are no ATMs in Trout Lake. You'll find banks and cash machines in Hood River and White Salmon. The nearest bank machine is 15 miles south of Trout Lake in BZ Corners (on Highway 141 about halfway between White Salmon and Trout Lake).
As for the climate, the temperature in September is glorious-warm dry days, crisp cold nights. It usually hovers around 75-degrees during the middle of the day and gets down into the low-40s, high-30s at night. Mornings are cold but they warm up as quickly as the sun rises.Sun rises about 5:30am and it's dark around 8:30pm.
The following is a list of places to stay in the Trout Lake Valley. We have also included the names of a few places in Hood River, Oregon (just 30 minutes south of the race sight) which might offer a few more amenities.
Early arrivals. Camping is allowed at the Pan American ride site for up to two weeks; however, nearby housing, electric hook-ups, and horseboarding are available to individuals and teams. If interested, please contact our lodging facilitator jelly@gorge.net who has put together a list of pasture space and homes for rent within close proximity to the 2003 PAC trail system.
